The following are items that students should consider handling during the 9th and 10th grades. Look at the "Resource Library" link for more information about the following:
Academics:
- PE! Students in PFAA must complete 20 PE credits to meet graduation requirements. If you do not plan to complete these credits by taking 2 dance classes, you must exercise and utilize PE logs to earn these credits. PE logs are available in the front office, in the media center, and in the online Resource Library. Turn in completed PE logs to the academic counselor. All PE logs are due by the first week of the spring semester of your senior year. 20 PE credits = 400 hours of exercise.
- Keep your grades up! Your grades in the 9th grade will determine what classes you will take in the 10th grade, as well as how prepared you will be for the rigorous 10th grade coursework. Don't be shy about talking to your teachers if you need help understanding assignments. Also meet with the counselor to receive additional support in organization and study skills. Utilize some of the online homework help and study skills resources listed on the Resource Library link.
College Preparation:
- College Entrance exams: Take the Mock PSAT in September and the PSAT in October.
- College enrichment: Attend college information fairs and participate in youth leadership conferences.
- College exploration: Visit universities with your family to get a better understanding of the college environment that you prefer.
- Advanced Education: Talk to the school counselor during the spring semester of the 10th grade about enrolling in a community college class for enrichment and to impress college admissions committees.
- Apply for scholarships to earn free money for college!
Career Exploration:
- Utilize the Bridges career exploration website and the California Reality Check website to learn about different careers that interest you.
- Attend college and career workshops and student career conferences.
Community Involvement:
- Practice your time management skills and build your résumé by participating in extracurricular activities and community service. See the Resource Library page for a list of opportunities.
